FOOTHILL. Located on Salt Lake City's east side, this fashionable shopping center ­ Utah's first ­ provides discriminating shoppers a range of upscale venues. Along with a potpourri of unique services and ethnic eateries, the village offers shops specializing in toys, jewelry, candy, and athletic gear. Well-known retailers include Bloomingdale's, Stein Mart, Hallmark, and White House/Black Market.

WEST JORDAN. Built in 1877 on the banks of West Jordan Canal, Gardner Mill was a prominent site for flour-milling in its day. Today, it serves as the centerpiece of this appealing shopping center and stands as a reminder of the mill's importance in the development of Salt Lake City's south side. As you walk through the village, keep in mind that these old buildings ­ a grist mill, mattress factory, blacksmith shop, and general mercantile store ­ were once a-bustle with pioneer spirit. These days, among the village's more noteworthy residents are Archibald's (a top local restaurant) and a host of specialty shops. They offer everything from Christmas ornaments and quilts to antiques and children's books. A petting zoo and pony rides are available seasonally.

DOWNTOWN. This open-air center, with its striking, welcoming architecture and tree-studded courtyards, is a regional shoppers' paradise. Resident stores suit just about anybody's taste and include Barnes & Noble, Build A Bear Workshop, Brookstone, Abercrombie & Fitch, Ann Taylor Loft, and Victoria's Secret. The upscale Gateway also boasts an excellent food court that's a great place to cool your heels and do a little people-watching. Among the center's more popular attractions are the historic Union Pacific Depot and Olympic Legacy Plaza.

DOWNTOWN. Just look for the 100-foot water tower a few blocks east of downtown proper, and you'll find this unique shopping center, which was constructed using the city's old trolley car barns and other historic properties. The aptly-named Trolley Square, a registered historic site, contains a potpourri of boutiques and gift shops, as well as restaurants and a modern theater complex. Search for apparel, books, linens, and more, and take advantage of pleasant outdoor dining when you need to rest from the shopping quest.
